This residence sits on a nine acre parcel off of Sturgeon Creek, which is directly connected to the Piscataqua River in Eliot, Maine. The site provides limited buildable land due to the river and wetland setbacks. Working closely with the owners, we found a location on the site that allowed the home to fit into the natural landscape with at grade access to both the front entry and the fully built-out half basement. The approach limited the visual impact from the street, preserve the privacy of indoor and outdoor spaces, while meeting the program needs of the family.
The owners entertain often and wanted a kitchen and living space that flowed together into a great room. There is a separate private dining space and audio room attached to the great room. Bedrooms are located in a square tower with the master bedroom on the top floor with excellent views of both water bodies. The residence was built to maximize energy efficiency. Walls are 2x8 wood stud construction with 2" of spray foam and dense pack cellulose to fill the remainder of the stud cavity. The roof construction consists of 14" trusses with spray foam and dense pack cellulose. The house exceeds energy expectations. The owners have noted on many occasions that they do not hear nor feel winter storms.
