Lassel Architects provided Energy Audits and architectural plans to renovate five foreclosed properties in a historic district of Rochester for the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. LA’s study reviewed existing conditions of building envelopes, indoor air quality, heating, ventilation, electrical systems and plumbing fixtures for opportunities in energy conservation, improved comfort, indoor health and safety. The interior layouts and living spaces were upgraded and/or redesigned. All homes were insulated and air sealed to exceed code requirements. The planning and renovation process involved close collaboration with the New Hampshire Division of Historic Resources in order to maintain the existing historic character of the buildings and neighborhood.
Estimates showed reduction in energy consumption of the houses between 50 to 70%. The graphs above show a graphic representation of the estimated BTU usage (British Thermal Units) before and after the renovation. BTU’s were calculated using energy models based on field investigations and blower-door testing. Four of the five buildings achieved Energy Star ratings with HERS Index Scores of 49, 52, and 56.
